Hot tea serves many purposes for health. Tea helps slow down the mind and body, leaving room to de-stress which is a major contributor to supporting the immune system.

Benefits of echinacea: 

Echinacea has been studied and shown to be effective in reducing the length of common cold and how severe the cold is. It is a known stimulant to the immune system and is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antimicrobial. 

Varieties: 

Traditional Medicinals Organic Echinacea Plus

This tea uses echinacea purpura which is the type that has been studied for its health benefits. This tea can be enjoyed anytime of day because it does not contain caffeine and should not make you feel sleepy. 

Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Echinacea Immune Boost

Celestial Seasonings’ Sleepytime teas are one of my favorites for just before bedtime. This variety of tea to boost immunity includes echinacea, zinc, vitamin C, and eucalyptus as additional herbal immunity boosters. Zinc has been known as an essential mineral for the immune system since the discovery of zinc deficiencies in the 1960s.  

Green Tea

Benefits of green tea:

Green tea contains polyphenols, a compound found in food that contain antioxidants, that are anti-inflammatory and anti-viral. Research has shown that tea polyphenols can help with immune responses, including decreasing influenza infections and some cold symptoms. 

Varieties: 

Tazo Zen Green Tea

This variety tastes both relaxing and slightly refreshing. Green tea has caffeine so it should be consumed in the morning or early afternoon. 

Bigelow Matcha Green Tea with Tumeric

Matcha is made by grinding green tea leaves into a powder and then steeping it in hot water. It is typically a little thicker and looks visibly green in your cup. Turmeric is another anti-inflammatory spice that has been used and studied for its ability to fight viruses and bacterial infections. 

Tea with elderberry

Benefits of elderberry:

Elderberry has been used to prevent and treat respiratory infections and was studied often at the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic. It has been shown to reduce the severity and length of viral infections but it may not prevent them. 

Variety: 

Yogi Tea Elderberry Lemon Balm with Ashwagandha

This is my favorite elderberry tea because it does not contain any artificial or non-nutritive sweeteners and is paired with ashwagandha. Ashwagandha has been researched for its ability to reduce the impact of stress and can promote better sleep and mental clarity. However, some people say that it gives them a slight boost of energy after drinking it, so it’s probably best to drink this tea in the morning or early afternoon. 

Tea with ginger

Benefits of ginger:

Ginger may help enhance the effectiveness of the flu vaccine by increasing antibody production, especially when consumed shortly after receiving the vaccine. Ginger can also help with settling an upset stomach and has anti-inflammatory properties. 

Variety: 

The Republic of Tea Ginger Peach Black Tea

Ginger can have a strong flavor and is tasty when paired with sweet flavors like the peach in the tea. This tea is also a true black tea which has similar properties to green tea. Black tea contains caffeine so it should be drunk in the morning or early afternoon. It’s great hot or cold!
